Holland America LineCruise & Maritime

A mix-and-match crew wardrobe for life at sea

Client

Holland America Line

Industry

Cruise & Maritime

Scope

9 workstreams

01

Objective

Design 12 items for men and 14 items for women that mix and match to create a nearly unlimited assortment of looks.

02

Project summary

Holland America Line came to UNITEN for a uniform programme that could hold a single, coherent brand image across a large crew while still leaving room for the individual.

Rather than issuing a fixed outfit, UNITEN built a capsule collection: a defined set of coordinated pieces that each employee can combine into their own look, with the brand identity woven into every product.

03

Design concept

The collection was drawn toward modern, sleek and streamlined looks — elevated with clean lines and high style rather than decoration.

Custom prints and accent pieces carry the client's identity, so that however an individual assembles their pieces on a given day, the overall image stays harmonious.

Scope of work

  • Brand and heritage research
  • Creative direction and illustration
  • Colour palette and print development
  • Technical flats and tech packs
  • Fabric and trim sourcing
  • Pattern making and sampling
  • Shoes and accessories development
  • Wear testing and model fittings
  • Production preparation

04

Development process

Designs were resolved into technical flats and full tech packs covering measurements, materials, trims, interior labelling and branded details.

Patterns were developed and samples produced for fitting, with adjustments carried back into the specification before grading.

Footwear and accessories were developed in parallel so that the complete look resolved as a single collection.

05

Materials & technical requirements

Fabrics were selected and developed for durability, comfort and ease of maintenance under the demands of shipboard service.

The collection features high-heat washable, anti-viral, anti-wrinkle and colour-fast qualities — specified for this programme's requirements.

06

Wear testing & fittings

A test group of company ambassadors wore the collection in service conditions, including fittings carried out on board.

Feedback from that group was evaluated and the product adjusted accordingly before production preparation.

07

Finished collection

The end result is a modern, sleek and streamlined wardrobe of high quality, world-class designs that are durable, comfortable and easy to maintain.

Because the pieces are designed to combine, the programme can be refreshed with new looks without a full redesign.
